Airport Worms Land at St Pats May 13 2010
ST Patrick’s School pupils can finally continue with an aspect of their sustainability studies they have been without since last year.
The pupils’ studies into composting and recycling were interrupted late last year when the worm farm they established on school grounds was stolen.
St Patrick’s School teacher Joanne Henderson told The Star last year that buying the worm farm had absorbed 90% of the class’s science budget, and the school would be unable to replace it.
However, after people read about the situation in The Star, the school received multiple offers of assistance, including the offer of a worm farm from Dunedin International Airport operations manager Richard Roberts.
The worm farm, complete with tiger worms from the airport’s own worm farm, was delivered to the school earlier this week by Dunedin International Airport assistant operations manager Steve Simpson.
St Patrick’s School Room 2 teacher Stephen Hopkins said the pupils were excited to have another worm farm at the school.
‘‘It’s been great of the airport to provide the children with an opportunity to continue their learning. It’s been a great experience for them.
‘‘This time though, we will keep the worm farm inside to prevent it from being stolen again.’’
